Near Field Communication (NFC) is a set of wireless communication rules and regulations or protocols that allows sharing of data within devices when made in contact by placing very closely together to less than 4 cm of distance. It uses radio waves to transfer and receive data and require less power to operate.
It does not require internet to connect devices (smartphones, laptops, tabs) capable of NFC. It is a part or subset of High Frequency RFID operating at 13.56 MHz of radio frequency. NFC is very secure way of data sharing and a NFC device can work both as a reader and a NFC tag, which is unlike RFID which has a reader and RFID tag as two separate units.
Many payment platforms use NFC to perform as it is very secure. Samsung Pay, Google Pay and Apple Pay are a few which uses NFC to accept payment.
